James D. Funk

James Funk has been involved with data administration and information quality issues for the last 20 years. He is currently the Chief Information Architect for a global manufacturing company and is responsible for information architecture and information quality policy within the organization. For the last 10 years he has focused on identifying root causes of poor information quality and the development of best practices for the presentation of information such as to increase its understanding and effectiveness. He has implemented information quality improvement processes in North America, Europe, South America and Asia. He has presented seminars on issues related to data administration and data quality at vendor user groups, such as IBM and First Logic. He has presented seminars at conferences hosted by Boston University and MIT on the value proposition of information quality. He has presented seminars on Information Quality in North America, China and Thailand. He is the co-author of the book “A Data Quality Journey” (MIT Press, forthcoming).

• James has been the conference co-chair of the annual MIT International Conference for Information Quality (ICIQ) for three years. He has been associated with the MIT TDQM program for almost 10 years and has championed the development of research that leads to new ideas that can be applied in industry, especially in the areas of improving the effective use of information. He is currently the co-chair of the Align Data Business Requirements Group sponsored by EAN International and UCC which is developing global standards for the exchange of accurate and consistent data between trading partners in the consumer products industry. In this role he has assisted in activity that is analyzing the causes of inaccurate data in the electronic exchange of information between partners and the development of best practices to overcome these problems.

• James has over 30 years experience in information technology and business in utility, manufacturing and retail environments. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge for solving information quality problems to these seminars and he has a passion for helping organizations understand how to become more effective and agile by beginning the journey to improved information quality
